DEVELOPING THE Cyanosis LED TUBE
In conjuction with one of our supplier we are developing a range of LED tubes that provide far more effective and energy-efficient illumination of clinical observation areas.
We have set about developing a TRUE White LED that meets the COI requirements.
The engineering brief was simple: all white LEDs, a high efficacy (lm/W) and at a price that would make substitution of the old fluorescent tubes commercially viable.
The “COI Optimised” SMD chips have been engineered with a suitable spectral output to achieve the CRI and COI specifications. The below diagram shows the considerable difference between the light output of the new COI chips compared to standard 4000K white LEDs of identical 4000K colour temperature.
For initial testing, 96 pcs of the new SMD chips were used in a 4 foot tube. The drive current was set to achieve nominal 18W (total) and resulted in over 2100 lumens – this is over 115 Lumens per Watt, and an outstanding performance from this specialised product.
This nominal output around 2100 Lumens was selected to closest match the overall “fixture output” of a conventional T8 fluorescent tube luminaire.

The advantages of these LED COI Tubes are:

No stroboscopic effects - eliminates risk of viewing of moving machinery, and prevents patterns due to refresh rates of cameras and monitor screens.
Instant illumination to 100% - no warm-up time like fluorescent.
Lamp life is not significantly affected by frequent switching - makes occupancy detection systems viable to save further energy.
Continuous spectrum output – far better overall colour accuracy than fluorescent (which has extremely uneven spectral output).
Cyanosis Observer Index (COI) of 2.0 - well below the maximum of 3.3 as defined by Standards.
Increased efficacy of around 115lm/W - over double the 55 to 70lmW for fluorescent lamp systems.
Wide beam angle (165° half peak angle) - wider beam compared to most other LED products (about 120°)
LED tubes are inherently directional, so will usually produce a far higher effective light level than a fluorescent of equal (total) light output.
- This allows the same light levels to be produced by an LED Tube of lower total output.
No exposed metal - completely safe and no risk of electrocution.
Fully safety tested, approved and Certified to latest Australian Standard AS/NZS 60598.2.1:2014
Inbuilt drivers at each end of the tube. Existing iron-core ballast can be left in-circuit or can be removed for additional reliability and power saving (about 1W).
